From humble beginnings in 1980 to a multi-national multi-billion dollar company

Herbalife did not begin like most companies. It is as unlikely a beginning as you could find. Most businesses begin when a would-be-entrepreneur spots a gap in the market place and fills the need.

The Herbalife story is a very different one and without getting all sentimental on you, the events leading to Herbalifes origins should be noted. The tragic events that played out in the life of an impressionable young man have made Herbalife the world’s leading Health & Nutrition Company.

 

Herbalife was founded in 1980 by Mark Hughes due to a personal tragedy.

Mark watched his mother struggle her entire adult life trying to lose a few kilos.

 

Her desire to shape up resulted in the abuse of prescribed diet pills. The “upper effect” resulted in her needing sleeping tablets. Over time this concoction became addictive, and in an attempt to feed her habit Marks mother visited different doctors at the same time in an effort to maintain the habit.

 

Years of abuse tragically resulted in Marks mother accidentally overdosing and dying at the young age of 36yrs. Mark was 18yrs at the time.

 

This sad life event gave Mark a mission, or life’s purpose. He was determined to find a safe, natural and effective way of weight control, so that others would not have to suffer the same fate.

 

Mark was not highly educated. He had the equivalent of a 10^th grade (Std.8)

He was however a very determined young man and intrigued by natural herbal remedies he saw in China, and with the help of experienced nutritionists, Mark came up with a simple, yet effective formula which would help millions of people around the world.

 

Mark became the very first person in the Western World to effectively include Herbs in a weight management program. He began selling Herbalife literally out of the boot of his car. His Granny was his very first customer.

 

It was not long though and soon Herbalife developed a reputation of been the preferred weight loss and wellness program for millions in more than 70 countries.
